Men’s Tennis Cleans Up WAC Awards; Nelson Earns Coach Of The Year

FRESNO, Calif. – The Western Athletic Conference 2010 men's tennis award winners, as selected by the league's head coaches, were announced at the WAC Tennis Tournament banquet Thursday night. Four Rainbow Warriors earned honors, while head coach John Nelson was named Coach of the Year.
 
Dennis Lajola and Andreas Weber each earned a sport on the first team for singles, while Leo Rosenberg was named to the second team. Weber also garnered first-team honors in doubles with partner Philipp Eberhard.
 
Lajola is the first UH tennis player to earn first-team honors three straight years. The native of 'Aiea, O'ahu, has played at the No. 1 court in every single match this year and earned WAC Player of the Week honors twice this season.

Weber, UH's lone senior, has now earned all-WAC honors in all four years he's suited up for the Rainbow Warriors. He's the second Rainbow Warrior to accomplish the feat, joining fellow German Sascha Heinemann who finished his career last season. It's the second time Weber, who went a perfect 5-0 in WAC singles play, has earned first-team honors in singles.
 
The native of Huenfeld, Germany, also earned all-WAC honors in doubles for the second time in has career and makes his first appearance on the first team along with Eberhard. The pair is currently ranked No. 75 in the latest ITA rankings.
 
Rosenberg gained a spot on the all-WAC second team for singles after a smashing regular season at the No. 3 position. The sophomore enters the WAC Tournament with an astounding 16-1 dual match record, after starting the spring with 14 straight wins.
 
Nelson, meanwhile, earned his second WAC Coach of the Year Award. Nelson, who also won the award in 2008, led his team to a share of the WAC regular-season title with a 4-1 record and the top seed in this week's WAC Tournament.
 
Nelson and the Rainbow Warriors seek their third straight WAC Tournament title this weekend. UH earned a bye into Saturday's semifinals and will face either Idaho or Nevada on Saturday, May 1st at 2:00 p.m. (11:00 a.m. HT).
