Pair Of Women’s Tennis Players Earn All-WAC Honors

FRESNO, Calif. – The Western Athletic Conference 2010 women's tennis award winners, as selected by the league's head coaches, were announced Thursday at the WAC Tennis Tournament banquet with senior Sophie Kobuch and freshman Katarina Poljakova each gaining recognition.

Kobuch and Poljakova were named to the all-WAC first team for doubles. Poljakova, a freshman from Vysoke Tatry, Slovakia , teamed with Kobuch to form a formidable doubles team at the No. 1 court. The pair went 13-5 during the regular season, including 5-2 in the WAC, and were particularly hot late, winning 10 of their last 11. Kobuch earned all-WAC doubles for the third straight year and made her initial appearance on the first team.

Kobuch, UH's lone senior, also earned second team honors in singles. The native of Tournefeuille, France, went 15-8 in dual matches, including 6-2 in league play, while playing the No. 1, 2 and 3 positions. She is UH's first three-time all-league performer in singles since Diane Okada (1993-95) accomplished the feat while the Rainbow Wahine competed in the Big West. Kobuch earned first team honors as a sophomore and second team honors the last  two years.

Kobuch, Poljakova and the rest of the Rainbow Wahine open WAC Tournament play on Friday, April 30 as the No. 4 seed and will face No. 5 Idaho at 11:00 a.m. PT (8:00 a.m. HT).
