HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i Warrior football team concluded its 2010 spring season with an autograph session and controlled scrimmage Friday night at the Clarence T.C. Ching Field.
After meeting and greeting fans for an hour, the Warriors hit the field for their final workout of the spring. More than 1,000 fans watched the team conduct a 90-minute situational scrimmage. UH ran more than 50 plays with its first though third strings rotating between series. The team also ran an overtime period and two-minute drill.
“I'm really proud of what I saw tonight,” head coach Greg McMackin said. “It was very competitive and very physical.”
Junior
Shane Austin and freshman
David Graves each took snaps at quarterback with the first team offense. The defensive held its own for the first half of the scrimmage, keeping the offense out of the end zone. The offense eventually got into gear, highlighted by the shifty running of
Chizzy Dimude and the more bruising style of freshman
John Lister.
Both touchdowns on the evening came on the ground—one a short burst by senior
Alex Green and the other a quarterback scramble by senior
Brent Rausch. Meanwhile, UH got a strong showing from senior kicker
Scott Enos who went a perfect 3-for-3 on field goals, including a 44-yarder to end the evening.
The first team defense was led by tackle
Vaughn Meatoga, who recorded a couple of sacks. The defense also snared two interceptions, one by
Richard Torres and another by
Jordan Gomes to halt the first-team offense in the two-minute drill. Sophomore
Steve Stepter had perhaps the most memorable play of the night with a vicious hit in the defensive backfield.
“This is my fifth spring,” said senior safety
Spencer Smith, “and this was the most competitive. I think we've learned a lot from spring ball this year. It was a real tough spring and I think it made us all ready for next season.”
The Warrior football team will return for fall practice in August, before opening its 2010 season at home against USC on Thursday, Sept. 2.
