Men’s Basketball Signs Elite Junior College Point Guard

HONOLULU – University of Hawai`i men's basketball coach Gib Arnold announced that junior college transfer Anthony Salter has signed a national letter of intent. Salter becomes the eighth member of UH's 2010-11 recruiting class and will join the Rainbow Warriors with two years of eligibility.

Salter, a 5-11, 175 lb point guard, comes to UH with an impressive resume. He was a two-time all-region selection for junior college powerhouse Iowa Western Community College in Council Bluffs, Iowa and led the team to a 42-19 two-year record and a pair of top 20 rankings. The native of Tallahassee, Fla., entered this past season ranked as nation's top point guard and No. 3 overall junior college player according to Rivals' JUCO Junction.

“We're excited to have Anthony join our UH family,” Arnold said. “He has great speed and quickness—something you can't teach—and the ability to create his own shot and shots for others. His ability to score gives us the ability to play two point guards on the floor at one time.”

As a freshman at Iowa Western, Salter averaged 15.4 points and dished out a team high 118 assists (3.8 apg) while shooting 48 percent from the field. As a sophomore, he was selected as a tri-captain and led the Reivers in scoring (12.6 ppg), assists (2.8), steals (35), free throws made (86) and free throw percentage (.777). The team finished with a 22-8 record and a regional semifinal appearance.

As a prepster, Salter was a Class 4A all-state selection at Rickards High School in Tallahassee after averaging 19 points, six assists and four rebounds per game as a senior in 2007-08. He helped lead the Raiders to a 20-5 record.

Salter is the fourth guard to sign with the Rainbow Warriors this year. UH's eight-player recruiting class consists of four high school standouts and four junior college transfers. Seven of the eight players have at least three years of eligibility remaining.

“This group of student-athletes will be the foundation of our program,” Arnold said, “and we're pleased they'll represent UH. This is a young group and there will be growing pains, but we're confident they'll help us build a winning program.”
