HONOLULU – University of Hawai'i men's tennis coach John Nelson announced the addition of two players to the 2010-11 roster. Jonathan Brooklyn, a native of Hillingdon, England, and Jared Spiker, a two-time Hawai'i state singles champion, both signed with UH and will join the program this fall.

 

Brooklyn, who stands 5-10, is currently the 57^th ranked player in England and has also earned rankings from the ATP (1,475) and ITF (1,468). He advanced to the round of 16 in the Great Britain Men's Futures 14, earning him an ATP points. He was also a quarterfinalist at the 2009 Aegon Scottish Jr. International, an ITF event. Brooklyn's older brother, Matt, just completed a stellar collegiate career at UCLA, helping the Bruins to a pair of deep NCAA Tournament runs as one of the top players in the Pac-10 Conference.

 

Spiker is a 2010 graduate of Kalani High School who has won back-to-back state singles titles for the Falcons. The native of Honolulu played just two years of high school tennis and during that span went undefeated, winning two league and two state singles titles. In 2009 Spiker became the first O'ahu Interscholastic Association player to win a state singles tennis title in 26 years.

 

The 5-9 Spiker is also a brown belt in judo and was accomplished in that sport—winning three national championships—before turning to tennis. His two older brothers both competed collegiately in wrestling after winning a combined five state high school championships.

 

UH is coming off another banner season, winning its third straight WAC title and advancing to the NCAA Tournament. Brooklyn and Spiker will help fill the void left by departing senior Andreas Weber.
