CLEVELAND – The University of Hawai'i Athletics Department finished ranked 61
st out of all Division I schools nationally in the Learfield Sports Directors' Cup standings with a total of 326 points. UH earned 83 points during the fall sports season, 43.50 points in the winter and 199.50 during the spring season.
The Directors' Cup is presented annually by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), Learfield Sports and USA Today to the best overall collegiate athletics programs in the country in NCAA Divisions I, II, and III and the NAIA. The 2009-10 winners were announced and awarded their Directors' Cups at NACDA's 44th Annual Convention in Orlando, Florida. The winning institutions were Stanford in Division I, Grand Valley State (Mich.) in Division II, Williams (Mass.) in Division III and Azusa Pacific (Calif.) in the NAIA.
UH is the second highest-ranked Western Athletic Conference school, behind Boise State, who finished one ahead of UH at 60th in the standings.
Since 1993, UH's highest final ranking was 53rd, accomplished in 2007-08 with 385 points.
To start the year, UH scored 83 points in volleyball, which finished third in the nation, reaching the NCAA Semifinals. During the winter sports season, women's indoor track and field finished 28th, earning 43.5 points.
Wrapping up the year, UH scored points in baseball, softball, men's tennis and women's outdoor track and field during the spring season. Baseball finished 17th, earning 50 points, softball finished fifth, earning 78 points, men's tennis finished 33rd, earning 25 points and women's outdoor track and field finished 26th, earning 46.5 points.
The Directors' Cup is a scoring system based on schools reaching NCAA postseason play. A school is only allowed to score points in 10 men's sports and 10 women's sports. There were 278 teams that scored at the Division I level in 2009-10.
