Pair of Women’s Water Polo Players Gain All-America Distinction

DENVER – The Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches announced its 2010 Women's All-American teams with two University of Hawai'i players earning recognition. UH sophomore attacker Monika Eggens gained a spot on the second team, while junior Leonie Van Der Molen was named honorable mention.

Eggens led the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation in scoring, averaging 2.31 goals per game and totaling 60 goals while playing all 26 games. The native of Pitt Meadows, British Columbia, was a first-team all-MPSF pick, was named to the all-MPSF tournament team and earned MPSF Player of the Week honors twice during the season. It is the first time she has received All-America accolades.

Van Der Molen, meanwhile, earned All-America recognition for the second straight year despite being limited to just 17 matches in 2010. The native of Diemen, Netherlands, scored 30 goals on the year, which still ranked in the top 10 in the conference. Van Der Molen was a second-team All-American last season.

In head coach Michel Roy's eight years at UH, he has helped produce 20 All-American performances, including multiple selections in each of the last six seasons. The Rainbow Wahine finished 2010 ranked sixth in the nation, after tallying an 18-8 overall record, including 6-4 in the MPSF.
