WAIPAHU, O'ahu — The University of Hawai'i opened its 2010 campaign with a 1-0 loss to Pacific in the 'OHANA Hotels and Resorts Shootout Friday night at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium.

Laura Hernandez scored the lone goal of the evening in the 58th minute to give the Tigers (1-0) a win over UH  (0-1) in Honolulu for the second straight year. Kristina Wavomba helped set up the game-winning goal when she danced along the UH's end line and slotted a ball to Angelica Figueroa in the middle of the box. Figuero then dropped the ball to the left corner of the box to Hernandez, who fired a shot inside the far post and past UH goalkeeper Kanani Taaca.

In a painful reminder of last season, the Rainbow Wahine generated more shots than their opponent, only to lose the match. UH doubled up the Tigers, 12-6, in the shots department, but came away  without a goal. UH's best opportunity came in the 35th minute when junior defender Brittani Lum fired a rocket from 25 yards out that bounced off the crossbar.

UH played its opener with four new starters in the lineup, including a trio of true freshman in Crystal Fresquez, Tarra Gabriel and Karli Look. The match was scoreless at the half with neither team generating many scoring opportunities. After Pacific scored early in the second half, UH pressed for a game-tying goal for the remaining 33 minutes, but came up empty. Pacific nearly added an insurance goal late in the match, but Alexandra Topp's header off a corner kick, bounced off the crossbar.

The tournament continues Saturday when Pacific takes on Wagner at 7:00 p.m. The Rainbow Wahine will be back in action on Sunday when they conclude the tournament against Wagner at 5:00 p.m.
