Women’s Soccer Clipped By Cal Poly, 2-1

Box Score

WAIPAHU, O'ahu – The University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine soccer team surrendered two first half goals and couldn't fully recover in a 2-1 loss to Cal Poly in the  OHANA Hotels and Resorts No Ka Oi tournament Friday night at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium.

For the second straight match the Rainbow Wahine employed a 3-5-2 formation. But it didn't render the same success as UH's 4-0 win over Wagner last Sunday. UH fell into an early hole when Cal Poly scored less than two minutes into the match and then saw the deficit go to 2-0 in the 37th minute.

Cici Kobinski scored 1:50 into the match for the Mustangs when she poked the ball past oncoming goalkeeper Kanani Taaca after a diagonal pass from Tiffany Gummow.  Bianca Burright scored the second goal of the match in the 37th minute when she sent a shot from 25 yards out past the out-stretched arms of Taaca.

Just 63 seconds after Cal Poly scored, Mari Punzal responded with UH's lone goal of the match. Rachel Domingo started the play by firing a shot into a wall of Cal Poly defenders. Punzal gathered the deflected ball and fired a low shot in the corner of the goal to make it 2-1. That would be all the scoring for the game however as the second half went scoreless.

UH doubled up Cal Poly on shots, 20-10, including an 8-5 advantage on shots on goal.  The Mustangs were able to put up just two shots in the second half and UH pressed for a equalizing goal in the final 45 minutes, but came up empty. The Rainbow Wahine appeared to tie the game in the 75th minute but Caycie Gusman's apparent goal was waved off after UH was called offside.

Long Island and Cal Poly will face off Saturday on the second evening of the OHANA Hotels and Resorts No Ka Oi. The Rainbow Wahine are back in action on Sunday, Aug. 29 when they face Long Island in the final match of the tournament. Kickoff is 5:00 p.m. at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
