Women’s Soccer Drops Overtime Decision

Box Score

WAIPAHU, O'ahu – The University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine soccer team suffered a crushing loss, falling in overtime to Long Island 1-0 in the OHANA Hotels and Resorts No Ka Oi tournament Sunday night at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium. The Rainbow Wahine dropped to 1-3 on the season.

Ari Calderon nailed home a penalty kick 18 seconds into overtime for the game winner. The Blackbirds (2-1) were awarded the kick after Toni Smith was tripped up in the UH box while making a run to the UH goal.

The penalty kick came after a nearly uneventful first 90 minutes of action. UH out-shot Long Island, 9-4, and neither team provided much of a threat offensively during regulation. However Long Island bolted forward immediately after the opening kickoff of the first overtime period with Smith getting free in the box

It was the second straight disappointing loss for the Rainbow Wahine, who lost to on Friday night, 2-1, to a Cal Poly. The Mustangs captured the touranment after a win on Saturday versus Long Island. All three of UH's losses this season have come by one goal and the Rainbow Wahine have out-shot all four of its opponents.

Kanani Taaca finished with three saves for UH, while Long Island goalkeeper Jessica Sexton finished with six saves.

The Rainbow Wahine now head to Northern California for its first road trip of the season. The three-match swing begins with a match against San Francisco in the Cal Invitational on Friday, Sept. 3.
