Mari Punzal scored the game-winning goal with less than six minutes remaining in regulation to lift the University of Hawai'i women's soccer team to a 3-2 win over San Francisco in the Cal Invitational on Friday afternoon.
UH (2-3) snapped a two-match losing streak, while handing the Dons (3-1) their first loss of the season. Punzal's goal helped UH stave off San Francisco after the Dons scored two goals in the second half to tie the game. It was Punzal's team-leading third goal of the year. Fellow senior
Chelsea Deptula scored UH's other two goals. It was the first multi-goal performance of her career.
Hawai'i jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 10
th minute when Deptula scored off an assist from Punzal. The native of Mililani, O'ahu, then gave UH a 2-0 lead early in the second half. Following a free kick, Deputla took a cross from
Tiffany Ikeda-Simao, firing it into the far right corner to give UH a two-goal cushion.
San Francisco battled back with goals in the 64
th and 76
th minute to knot things up. However, Punzal would thwart the Don comeback bid by scoring at the 84:01 mark off an assist from
Kaylee Kihara.
Hawai'i out-shot San Francisco, 13-8. Eleven of those shots were fired in the first half as Punzal's game-winning came on the just one of two shots by UH in the second frame.
