BERKELEY, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i soccer team found the going rough in its second road match of the season with an 8-1 loss to No. 21 California in the Cal Invitational Sunday afternoon. The Rainbow Wahine dropped to 2-4 on the season.
The eight goals were the most ever given up by a UH team, eclipsing the old record set by Brigham Young when they defeated the Rainbow Wahine, 7-0, in a Western Athletic Conference match in 1998. The seven-goal deficit also tied a mark for the program's largest margin of defeat.
Facing their first ranked opponent of the year, the Rainbow Wahine were simply overmatched by the host Bears (3-0-2). UH was competitive up until halftime, trailing just 2-1 a minute before halftime. But the Bears scored six unanswered goals—one right before the first half concluded and five more after the break—to roll past Hawai'i.
Senior forward Alex Morgan tallied a hat trick for the Bears, including a pair a goals within a 52-second span at the beginning of the second half. Cal out-shot Hawai'i, 21-9, and fired 13 shots in the second half. The match concluded the Cal Invitational, which saw the Bears as the only team to finish at a perfect 2-0.
Chelsea Deptula provided UH its lone highlight of the day when she scored off a
Mari Punzal throw-in in the 43
rd minute. Deptuala's third goal of the weekend made the score 2-1 and put UH right back in the match. But it was a fleeting glimmer of hope as the Bears responded less than 90 seconds later to take a 3-1 lead into halftime.
UH concludes its three-match road trip when it Saint Mary's on Tuesday, Sept. 7. Kickoff is 4:00 p.m. PT.
