Women’s Soccer Falls To Pepperdine, 2-0

Box Score

HONOLULU – Pepperdine scored a goal in each half to take down the University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine soccer team, 2-0, in the Outrigger Hotels Soccer Classic Sunday night at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. The Rainbow Wahine dropped to 2-7 overall with their fourth straight loss of the season.

After a lackluster performance against tournament champion Washington State two nights earlier, the Rainbow Wahine turned in a much more inspired effort against the Waves. However, it wasn't enough against a Pepperdine (5-3-1) squad that found its groove late in the first half

Their wasn't a single shot in almost 30 minutes of action to start the match, but Pepperdine made good on the first one at the 29:50 mark when Michelle Spacciapolli put it in the back of the net after receiving a flick pass from Michelle Manning.

The Waves made its 2-0 in the 69th minute off a goal by Callie Payetta. Laura Cole started the play by firing a shot off the UH post, as Payetta came in for the rebound and got the insurance goal the Waves needed.

UH showed marked improvement, however continued to struggle in the goal-scoring department. UH managed just four shots against Pepperdine, including just one shot on goal for the match . The Rainbow Wahine have now been shutout in three straight matches and have lost four straight games at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium for the first time in school history.

The Rainbow Wahine will now head to the mainland for their second road trip of the year with a pair of games in Northern California. First up for UH is a meeting with No. 2 Stanford on Thursday, Sept. 23 at 7:00 p.m. PT (4:00 HT).
