WAIPAHU, O'ahu – The University of Hawa`i women's soccer team got off to a rough start in Western Athletic Conference play with a 4-0 loss to Boise State in the league opener for both teams Friday at the Waipi`o Peninsula Soccer Stadium. UH dropped to 2-9-1 overall and 0-1 in the WAC.
Shannon Saxton recorded a hat trick to and Boise State (4-7-1, 1-0) scored three first-half goals to cruise to victory. Saxton scored two of her goals in the first half and added a third in the 76th minute.
Saxton scored in the 15th minute to give Boise State a 1-0 lead, then the Broncos got two goals in an 80 second span late in the half to take a commanding 3-0 lead into the break. After Saxton scored the second goal of the match at the 37:36 mark, Rebe Wolverton, fresh off the bench, scored another goal at 38:57.
The Rainbow Wahine, who have not scored in their last six matches, had a great opportunity late in the first half when
Kaylee Kihara hit a high ball toward to the Boise State goal. The shot, however, was thwarted by Bronco goalkeeper Liz Ruiz.
It was UH's first-ever home loss to the Broncos in six meetings in Honolulu (4-1-1) and the worst margin of defeat in 12 all-time matches between the squads. The Rainbow Wahine remained winless in their last seven matches.
Next up for the Rainbow Wahine is a meeting with Idaho on Sunday, Oct. 3. Kickoff is at 5:00 p.m. at the Waipi`o Peninsula Soccer Stadium. The match will be televised live on KFVE-TV.
