Women’s Soccer Finds Back Of The Net In Loss

Box Score

WAIPAHU, O'ahu – The University of Hawa`i women's soccer team finally got on the scoreboard but it wasn't enough as it fell to Idaho, 3-1, in a Western Athletic Conference match Sunday at the Waipi`o Peninsula Soccer Stadium. UH dropped to 2-10-1 overall and 0-2 in the WAC.

Senior Lauren Ho scored in the 20th minute off an assist from Kaylee Kihara as the Rainbow Wahine ended a school-record scoring drought that lasted 6-plus matches and nearly 625 minutes. However, UH still couldn't overcome two first-half goals by Idaho's Chelsea Small. The Vandals took a 2-1 lead at the break then tacked on an insurance goal in the 86th minute by Megan Lopez to seal the win.

It was Idaho's first-ever win over Hawai`i in seven all-time meeting. UH, meanwhile, has lost seven of its last eight matches. The Rainbow Wahine also set a new school-record with their sixth straight home loss.

Small gave Idaho a 1-0 lead just 3:08 into the match. After a Vandal free kick, UH failed to clear the ball and Small put home a point blank shot in front of the goal. The Rainbow Wahine responded a little more than 15 minutes later off the foot of Ho, who scored less than two minutes after checking into the match. The senior took a feed from Kihara on the left side of the box and sent a shot that bounced off the far post and into the back of the net.

The jubilation wouldn't last long for UH as Small scored her second goal of the match in the 25th minute off a service from Lauren Layton. That put the Vandals back up 2-1 and it was a lead they would not relinquish.

Next up for the Rainbow Wahine is three-match road trip which includes WAC matches at San Jose State (Oct. 8) and Fresno State (Oct. 10) and a non-conference tilt at Cal State Bakersfield (Oct. 12).
