Pilares’ Big Game Draws Recognition From WAC

DENVER – University of Hawai'i slot receiver Kealoha Pilares was named the Verizon Wireless Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week after his record-breaking performance in UH's 41-21 win over Louisiana Tech on Saturday.

Pilares, a Damien Memorial High School graduate, set a new school record with 18 catches, passing the previous mark of 16 set by current teammate Greg Salas last year versus New Mexico State. The senior also finished with a career-high 217 receiving yards against the Bulldogs, the seventh best performance in school history.

For the second straight game, Pilares scored twice – a seven-yard reception at the start of the second quarter and a 66-yard catch-and-run on UH's next possession. It marks the third time this season he has multiple touchdown games. Pilares has scored in each of the team's first five games and has a team-leading nine touchdowns on the season. In his first three years combined, he tallied seven receiving touchdowns.

Also in Saturday's victory, quarterback Bryant Moniz passed for a career-high 532 yards and four touchdowns on 42-of-58 passing. He received honorable mention for the Davey O'Brien Quarterback Award's Quarterback of the Week.

Moniz's passing total is the sixth highest in school history and the most since Colt Brennan's 545 yards at San Jose State in 2007. Moniz's 42 completions was two shy of Brennan's record of 44 set in 2007 in that same San Jose State game. UH's 647 yards of total offense was a season high and the seventh highest total in school history.

The Warriors will travel to Fresno, Calif., for a WAC showdown with rival Fresno State, Saturday, Oct. 9 at Bulldog Stadium. Kick-off is 7:00 p.m. PT (4:00 p.m. HT).
