Women’s Soccer Gains Hard-Earned Draw

Box Score

SAN JOSE, Calif. – The University of Hawa`i women's soccer team battled San Jose State to a 1-1 tie in a double-overtime Western Athletic Conference match Friday night at Spartan Stadium. UH moved to 2-10-2 overall and 0-2-1 in the WAC.

After opening the conference season with a pair of tough home losses last weekend, the Rainbow Wahine put forth a strong effort on the road with a second-half rally. After UH fell behind 1-0 in the first half, Brittani Lum evened up the score with her first career goal in the 64th minute on a 20-yard shot. That score stood as neither team found the back of the net in the remainder of regulation and the ensuing two overtime periods.

San Jose State (6-5-1, 1-0-1 WAC) staked a 1-0 lead after Jessica Ingram scored in the 24th minute off an assist from Kayla Santa Cruz. The Rainbow Wahine hung on despite being out-shot, 25-9. Sophomore goalkeeper Kanani Taaca recorded seven saves to help preserve the tie.

It was the third overtime match of the season and the second straight on the road for UH. The Rainbow Wahine are 0-1-2 in those matches. UH is still looking for an elusive victory and have gone winless in its last nine matches (0-7-2).

Next up for the Rainbow Wahine is another WAC match in California as UH takes on Fresno State on Sunday, Oct. 10. Kickoff is 1:00 p.m. PT (10:00 a.m. HT) at Bulldog Stadium.
