Women’s Soccer Falls To CSUB In Overtime

Box Score

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The University of Hawai`i women's soccer team erased a two-goal deficit before eventually falling in double-overtime to Cal State Bakersfield, 3-2, in a non-conference match Tuesday night. The Rainbow Wahine dropped to 3-11-2 with the loss.

Sam Pena recorded a hat trick for the Road Runners (4-4-5), including the game-winner in the 102nd minute. Pena helped CSUB stake a 2-0 lead with a pair of goals—one in the 21st minute, and another just 28 seconds into the second half.

Despite the two-goal deficit, the Rainbow Wahine wouldn't quit. Skye Shimabukuro put Hawai`i on the board with a goal in the 66th minute. It was the second straight match the sophomore scored, following her match-winning goal at Fresno State on Sunday. UH would then force overtime after Chelsea Deptula evened things up with just seven minutes left in regulation. It was the third goal of the season for the senior.

Playing their second overtime match in its last three road contests, UH battled to the bitter end. Kristina Ehrett made her first start of the season in goal and made four saves, before surrendering the game-winner less than two minutes into second overtime period.

The Rainbow Wahine now return home and will play its annual Alumnae match on Sunday, Oct. 17. Kickoff is 5:00 p.m. at the Waipi`o Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
