EDMONTON, Alberta – The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team improved to a perfect 3-0 at the Can-Am Challenge of Champions tournament after winning a pair of five-set matches Friday at Alberta's Main Gym.
In the morning session, the Warriors rallied from two sets down to defeat Calgary, the defending Canadian collegiate champion, 22-25, 21-25, 25-16, 25-21, 15-10. In the comeback victory,
Jonas Umlauft had a match-high 25 kills on 53 swings and added five digs and four blocks.
Josh Walker added 18 kills and five digs while freshman
Shane Welch came off the bench and had a team-best six blocks.
In the night-cap, Hawai'i rallied again, this time down two sets to one for a 28-26, 21-25, 19-25, 25-22, 15-13 victory over Manitoba. Umlauft buried a match-high 33 kills on 32.8 percent hitting and 12 digs and two aces.
Steven Hunt, a Toronto native, added 13 kills and six digs. UH won despite being out-hit .336 to .268 and out-blocked 18 to 11.5.
For the day, Umlauft had 58 kills for a 5.8 kills per set average.
The Warriors wrap up the tournament against tournament host Alberta, Saturday.
