Hawai`i Softball Sweeps Fall Opener Over Christian Brothers

HONOLULU—The University of Hawai`i softball team opened its fall season with a sweep of Christian Brothers, 10-0 (five innings) and 3-0. Both of UH's pitchers, Stephanie Ricketts and Kaia Parnaby, fired one-hit shut-outs on Tuesday night at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
 
GAME 1: Hawai`i 10, Christian Brothers 0 (five innings)

Ricketts, UH's junior pitcher, fired a one-hit shut-out as the 'Bows defeated the Buccaneers, 10-0 in a mercy-rule, five inning game. Ricketts took a no-hitter into the final inning, before giving up a single to left. She tossed a complete game with a walk and six strike outs.
 
The Rainbow Wahine posted two runs in the first inning. Kelly Majam led the game off with a walk and scooted to third on a double hit by Melissa Gonzalez the hit the fence in leftfield. Majam then scored on a line drive sacrifice fly to leftfield by Makani Duhaylonsod-Kaleimamahu. Later, Gonzalez scored on a wild pitch to give UH an early 2-0 lead.
 
The 'Bows added a single run in both the second and third inning. In the second inning, Mikalemi Tagab-Cruz led off with a walk, stole second and later scored on an RBI single by Majam. In the third inning, Gonzalez hit her second double of the night to deep leftfield. Pinch runner Jazmine Zamora then advanced to third and scored on two wild pitches to give UH a 4-0 lead.
 
Hawai`i then put the game away in the bottom of the six, scoring six runs. Zamora led the inning off with a solo homer over the leftfield fence. Ricketts followed with a single up the middle. Pinch runner Brynne Buchanan then stole second and after a fly out to left and a walk to Majam, both runners moved into scoring position on a fly by Iwata to left. Gonzalez then drilled her third double of the game down the leftfield line to score both Buchanan and Majam. Sarah Robinson kept things going with a single to left and Alex Aguirre drilled a two-run home run to cap the scoring and bring UH's lead to 10-0.
 
CBU's Michelle McEachron tossed the complete game, giving up 10 runs with four walks and four strike outs.
 
Gonzalez led the 'Bows at the plate, going 3-for-3 with the three doubles, while both Zamora and Aguirre launched home runs.
 
GAME TWO: Hawai`i 3, Christian Brothers 0
Box Score
Parnaby, UH's sophomore pitcher, earned the win in the second game of the night, also tossing a one-hit shut-out with two walks and nine strike outs in seven innings of work.
 
Iwata scored UH's first run in the top of the first inning. She beat out an infield single to start the rally. Zamora drew a walk and Gonzalez was hit-by-a-pitch to load the bases. Iwata then scored on a ground out to short hit by Robinson.
 
The 'Bows added the second run in the fourth. Aguirre led the inning off with a walk and stole second. She came home on Ashley Smith's opposite-field single to right to give UH a 2-0 lead.
 
Hawai`i rallied again in the sixth to post one final run. After a ground out to third, Smith got a single to second base. Gerika Pantohan followed with a ground ball to third, but on the play, the third baseman tried to cut down the lead runner at second, but the throw was muffed which allowed both runners to be safe. Later Smith scored on a fielder's choice to first.
 
The Buccaneers' Kaylea Brewer took the loss in a complete game effort. She gave up three runs on seven hits with two walks and one strike out.
 
The Rainbow Wahine next face Chaminade in a three-game series starting on Friday, Nov. 5 at 6:00 pm. The series concludes with a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 12:00 pm.
