Box Score

WAIPAHU, O`ahu – The University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine soccer team played New Mexico State to a 2-2 tie in double overtime on Senior Night at Waipi`o Peninsula Soccer Stadium. UH's four departing seniors – Chelsea Deptula, Caycie Gusman, Laura Euers and Mari Punzal were honored following the game after making their final home appearance.

With the tie UH moved to 3-12-3 and 1-3-2 in the Western Athletic Conference. The Rainbow Wahine remained in seventh place in the league standings with two WAC matches remaining. The top six teams advance to the WAC Tournament in Ruston, La.

The Rainbow Wahine twice held the lead in the match, but were unable to bag the win. The tie, however, snapped a school-record seven-match home losing streak.

The Rainbow Wahine got on the board on their first shot of the match at the 7:37 mark. Laren Ho sent a cross from the left flank to Rachel Domingo, who one-timed the pass off the bounce with a shot that found the net just inside the far post. It was the first goal of the season for the senior.

New Mexico (7-7-3, 1-5-1 WAC) had an answer less than two minutes later when Crystal Burns went near post to Yolanda McMillion who flicked home a shot to equalize the match in the 10th minute.

UH would recapture the lead just three minutes into the second half after being awarded a free kick just outside the 18-yard box. Junior Brittani Lum sent a laser that cleared just wide of a wall of New Mexico State defenders and inside the far post for a Rainbow Wahine goal.

But again New Mexico State would have a quick answer when the Aggies scored off a corner kick as UH goalkeeper Kanani Taaca mishandled the ball. That goal in the 58th minute made it 2-2.

The teams would go scoreless the remaining 52 minutes, however, the Aggies nearly came away with a goal with less than five minutes left in regulation off a free kick that hit the cross bar. . UH held a 14-6 shot advantage for the match.

The Rainbow Wahine conclude their regular season on the road with a pair of matches at Nevada (Oct. 29) and Utah State (Oct. 31) as they attempt to qualify for this year's WAC Tournament in early November.
