HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team hosts Chaminade in an exhibition game to start the 2010-11 campaign on Thursday, Nov. 4 at 7:05 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.
The Rainbow Wahine, led by second-year head coach Dana Takahara-Dias, returns 10 letterwinners and three starters from last year's squad that posted a 10-20 record overall and a 4-12 record in Western Athletic Conference action. Leading the team is senior guard
Keisha Kanekoa, who started all 30 games last year and led UH with 11.2 points per game, 40 steals, and a .774 free-throw percentage. Kanekoa is just 140 points shy of becoming just the 16th player in Rainbow Wahine history to hit the 1.000 point mark. Returning after a redshirt season is senior guard,
Megan Tinnin who averaged 10.3 points per game as a junior and is just 12 three-point baskets shy of tying Nani Cockett's career school record of 128 set in 1998. Also returning is
Shawna-Lei Kuehu, who received a medical hardship waiver for 2009-10 after going down with a season-ending injury early last year.
The 'Bows welcome four newcomers to the team—two junior college transfers and two freshmen. Forward
Carlotta Mingo comes to Hawai'i after two seasons at Harcum College in Bryn Mawr, Pa. where she helped lead the Lady Bears to the NJCAA Region 19 tournament championship. Junior guard
Keianna Evans comes to UH from Kaskaskia Junior College in Illinois where she averaged 15.3 points and 2.4 assists per game last season. Freshman guard
Sydney Haydel is a 2010 graduate of Harvard-Westlake High School in North Hollywood, Calif where lettered all four years in basketball and track and field. She helped lead her team to a 2009 and 2010 CIF division IV AA championship and a division state championship in 2010. Fellow frosh, forward
Kamilah Jackson, averaged 17.9 points per game and 8.3 rebounds per game in her senior year at the powerful Sacred Heart Cathedral High School in Oakland, Calif.
The Rainbow Wahine once again has a diverse squad featuring players from five different states (Arizona, California, Hawai'i, New Mexico, and North Carolina) and five foreign countries (Canada, Guyana, Japan, Lithuania, and New Zealand).
Hawai'i will host another exhibition game against BYU-Hawai'i on Nov. 11 at 7:05 p.m. before opening their regular season versus CS Northridge on Nov. 19 at 5:00 p.m. in the Jack in the Box Rainbow Wahine Classic.The 'Bows will play 19 home games at the Stan Sheriff Center, as well as two games in Hilo, Hawai'i in the Chevron Rainbow Wahine Shootout at the Afook-Chinen Auditorium.
Chaminade head coach Bobby Keanini makes his debut with the Silverswords in the exhibition game. Last season, the Swords went 1-23 overall. Junior center Kayci Will is the Swords' top returnee, averaging 9.3 points and 5.5 rebounds per game in 2009-10. Junior forward Kellene Costello played in all 24 games last season, averaging 7.7 points and 3.3 rebounds per game while sophomore guard Jamie Higa had a strong freshman season, averaging 6.5 points with 29 assists and 19 steals last year.
