Diving Hosts Dual-Meet Against Top Rival Arizona State

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i men's and women's diving teams host Arizona State University this weekend in a dual diving event at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex. The event, which brings together two of the top diving schools in the NCAA will be a special competition for UH diving.

ASU brings tough competition to the event, including diving all-Americans Elina Eggers (Sweden), Riley McCormick (Canada), and Constantine Baha (Austria) who also represented their home countries in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

“Our Hawaii divers have had a very good fall of hard work and it is time to start competing and see how the team will respond to some top competition,” said head diving coach Mike Brown. “It is all part of a long learning process which leads to Conference Championships in February and the NCAA Qualifying Meet in March.”

UH will be lead by 2010 WAC Diver of the Year, senior Stephanie De Lima, and men's conference champion junior Douglas Cohen. The Rainbow Wahine will field a strong team with junior Daniella Nero and sophomore Hannah Bocksnick. Nero and Bocksnick both earned first and second place finishes at the Senior Diving Meet (Oct. 23).

The men's team will field a much improved junior Thomas Rugg along with newcomer Luke Hayes, who arrived in August from Melbourne, Australia. Cohen, Rugg and Hayes all took first, second and third place finishes in all events at the Senior Diving Meet.

Each team will field three or four divers in each men's and women's event along with three mixed pairs in the Springboard Team event.  The top 6 divers will score points for their teams (1st =7 points, 2nd = 5 points, 3rd = 4 points, 4th = 3 points, 5th = 2 points, 6th = 1 point).

"This competition will be a great lead in to our team's trip in two weeks to Tucson, Arizona for the Wildcat Diving Invitational, which features a large high quality field of 16 diving teams from around the country," said assistant coach Anita Rossing.

The diving begins on Friday, November 5, at 3:30 pm and runs through Saturday, Nov. 6 at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Complex.  Admission is free.
