HONOLULU – The new-look University of Hawai'i men's basketball team started a new era with a bang with an 83-55 exhibition win over Chaminade Saturday night at the Stan Sheriff Center. Led by first-year head coach
Gib Arnold, the Rainbow Warriors were relentless on both ends of the court in easily dispatching the Division II Silverswords.
Joston Thomas—one of 10 newcomers on this year's squad—led four Rainbow Warriors
in double digits with 25 points.
Bill Amis returning to action after sitting out last season, finished with 14 points, seven rebounds and three blocks. Transfer
Zane Johnson poured in 13 points, while freshman
Bo Barnes sank all three of his three-point attempts and finished with 11. All 10 players who suited for UH saw action with nine of those players getting in the scoring column.
On the defensive end the Rainbow Warriors forced 20 Silversword turnovers, while out-rebounding Chaminade 23-14 in the second half. UH also took care of the basketball, committing just nine turnovers for the game.
Chaminade scored the first bucket of the contest, but after that it was all Rainbow Warriors. UH scored eight straight points to spark a 14-1 run to put the 'Bows up by double digits just six minutes into the game. UH built its lead to as many as 22 in the first half, before taking a 42-27 lead into the break.
Chaminade cut the lead to 10 points midway through the second half with some hot three-point shooting. But UH simply turned the intensity up a notch as a 14-4 run put the 'Bows back ahead by 20 points and they never looked back.
Hawai'i will officially open its regular season against Montana State on Friday, Nov. 12 in the Outrigger Hotels Rainbow Classic. Tipoff is 7:00 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.
