Women's Basketball Opens Season With Jack in the Box Rainbow Wahine Classic

GAME NOTES

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine basketball team opens the 2010-11 season with the 31st Jack in the Box Rainbow Wahine Classic, Nov. 19-21 at the Stan Sheriff Center. Second year head coach Dana Takahara-Dias leads the 'Bows into battle as they host Cal State Northridge, Eastern Michigan, and Oregon State.

The Rainbow Wahine are coming off a pair of exhibition wins over Chaminade and BYU- Hawai'i. Against the DII Silverswords, freshman Kamilah Jackson led UH with 15 points and nine rebounds to help carry the 'Bows to a 74-34 victory. Last week, the 'Bows overcame a slow start to surge past BYU-H, 73-49. Redshirt freshman guard/forward, Shawna-Lei Kuehu led the Rainbow Wahine with a strong overall performance with 16 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three blocked shots. Also having solid games were Jackson and Breanna Arbuckle who both tallied double-doubles in the win over the Seasiders.

Takahara-Dias had a 10-20 overall record and a 4-12 mark in Western Athletic Conference games in her first season with the Rainbow Wahine. Senior co-captains Keisha Kanekoa and Megan Tinnin will lead UH into action in 2010-11. Kanekoa, who started all 30 games last year, led UH with 11.2 points per game, 40 steals, and a .774 free-throw percentage and is just 140 points shy of becoming just the 16th player in Rainbow Wahine history to reach the 1.000 point mark. Tinnin returns after taking a redshirt year last season. In 2008-09, she averaged 10.3 points per game as a junior and is just 12 three-point baskets shy of tying Nani Cockett's career school record of 128 set in 1998.
