Swimming Concludes Day One Of Arena Invitational

Day 1 Results

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The men's and women's swimming and diving teams completed the first day of the Arena Invitational, hosted by UC San Diego in Long Beach, Calif. Thursday night, following 10 events.
With tough competition from 10 different squads, the Rainbow Warriors kicked off the invitational strong with five top finishes.
 
Sophomore Luca Mazzurana won the men's 200 IM with a time of 1:47.24, while UNLV's Giaco Gremizzi (1:47.33) and Air Force Academy's Ben Gunn (1:47.73) followed in second and third. Junior Perry Sharify also earned points for UH, finishing 19th (1:51.92) in the 200 IM bonus heat.

The Rainbow Warriors finished third in the 400 medley relay (3:17.87) behind first place Stanford (3:12.57) and second place UNLV (3:14.71) with a team composed of juniors Lazar Bogdanovski and Sean Reilly, Sharify, newcomer Ryan Pickett. Reilly, Pickett, senior Ilia Reyes and junior Vlad Anastasescu took fourth in the men's 200 free relay with a time of 1:21.18.

In the 50 free event, Reilly placed fourth with a time of 20.08 while Reyes followed in eighth with a time of 20.37. Sophomore James Clarke finished ninth in the 500 free (4:26.85) while Bogdanovski followed with a time of 4:32.65 to take 15th in the consolation heat.
 
For the Rainbow Wahine, a squad made up of newcomers Christa Prior and Madeline Takaki and seniors Maura Barrett and Jessica Stacy finished 11th in the women's 400 medley relay with a time of 3:49.47.
 
Barrett also took 17th (23.13) in the 50 free, while senior Ricarda Schellenberg finished 24th in the 500 free (5:01.22) both earning points for UH in bonus heats.
 
Swimming continues the Arena Invitational tomorrow Nov. 19 all day while diving kicks off its first day of the Wildcat Diving Invitational in Tucson, Ariz.
