Rainbow Wahine Basketball Holds Off Oregon State, 54-49

Box Score

HONOLULU—The University of Hawai`i women's basketball team (2-1) held off the Oregon State Beavers (3-1), 54-49 in the finale of the 2010 Jack in the Box Rainbow Wahine Classic. Breanna Arbuckle had a game-high 13 points to lead UH to the win and earn tournament Most Valuable Player honors on Sunday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Megan Tinnin also had a solid game for the 'Bows, posting 12 points on four-of-seven three-pointers. Tinnin did a little of everything, grabbing five rebounds with two assists, two blocks and two steals. The Rainbow Wahine out-rebounded the Beavers 39-31 with Shawna-Lei Kuehu leading the team with 12 rebounds (nine defensive). Kuehu chipped in seven points, dished out three assists, had a blocked shot and swiped a team-high four steals while Keisha Kanekoa handed out a game-high six assists.

In the first half, Oregon State took an early 4-3 lead, but UH then raced out to an 11-4 lead and never looked back. The 'Bows took a 30-19 lead over Oregon State into the half, ending the first half on a 9-0 run fueled by six points by Rebecca Dew (two field goals and two free throws) and Tinnin's third three-pointer of the first half.

The Rainbow Wahine had built the lead to as many as 15 points in the second half, but Oregon State closed the gap on Hawai`i, outscoring UH 30-24 in the second half. OSU actually cut Hawai`i's lead down to three points with just one-minute to go, but Arbuckle hit a pair of clutch free-throws with 28 seconds to go, giving UH a five-point cushion to seal the win.

Tinnin's four three-pointers made leaves her just three treys short of tying the UH career record of 128 set by former UH great, Nani Cockett in 1998.
Oregon State's Sage Indendi led her team with 11 points while Earlysia Marchbanks grabbed a team-high six rebounds.

The tournament ended with a three-way tie first place with Oregon State, Eastern Michigan and Hawai`i all with a 2-1 record. Therefore, the tourney champion was determined by the team that allowed the least amount of points in the three games, so Oregon State earned the title, allowing just 130 points overall. Hawai`i came in second, giving up a total of 190 points and Eastern Michigan came in third with 194 points allowed.

Hawai`i will next host the Waikiki Beach Marriott Rainbow Wahine Showdown, Nov. 26-29. Teams in the tournament are Gonzaga, Illinois, Long Beach State, Mississippi, North Carolina, Washington State, and UH's first opponent North Carolina Central. The 'Bows open the tourney on Friday, Nov. 26 at 7:00 p.m.
