Moniz, Brown Earn WAC Weekly Awards

DENVER – University of Hawai'i quarterback Bryant Moniz and linebacker Aaron Brown were named the Verizon Western Athletic Conference offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively, following their performances in UH's 41-7 win over San Jose State.

Moniz, a junior from Wahiawa, O'ahu (Fresno City College), threw for a school-record 560 yards on 32-of-44 passing and three touchdowns. He broke the old record of 559 set by Colt Brennan in the 2006 Sheraton Hawai'i Bowl with just over 11 minutes to play in the game. Moniz had eight passes for more than 25 yards and moved into third place on the school's all-time passing list with 6,330 yards.

This marks the third time Moniz has been selected for the weekly award this season. The junior currently leads the nation in both passing (357.6) and total offense (362.7).

Brown, a junior from Puyallup, Wash. (Saddleback Community College), made five tackles, including one sack, and intercepted two passes in the win over the Spartans.  He returned the first interception 22 yards for a touchdown to give the Warriors a 17-0 lead early in the second quarter. The interceptions were the first in his career.

Brown and the Warrior defense limited the Spartans the 164 yards of total offense. UH, which currently leads the nation in takeaways with 31, has at least two interceptions in the past eight games and Brown was the fourth Warrior to record multiple picks this season.

This also marks the third time this season, UH has swept the offense and defensive player of the week awards. Running back Alex Green and linebacker Corey Paredes won the award following the Warriors' win over Utah State while Moniz and safety Mana Silva were the recipients following UH's win over Idaho.

The Warriors close out WAC play with a road game at New Mexico State this Saturday at Aggie Memorial Stadium. Kick-off is 1:00 p.m. MT (10:00 a.m. HT).
