Greg McMackin's Weekly Press Conference

HONOLULU – University of Hawai`i Warrior football head coach Greg McMackin conducted his weekly press conference Monday, recapping the team's home win over San Jose State and looking ahead to UH's upcoming road game against New Mexico State.

On the San Jose State game…
I'm really proud of our players and coaches. We came off a bye and a tough defeat. We were a little sloppy at the first part of the game on offense, but …they obviously overcame that. That's why we wanted to get a lot of reps and so that we could get fresh. I've told you before that I really think byes hurt the timing on offense, but I thought they got over it and moved the ball. Obviously (Bryant) Moniz set the school record, our receivers are back catching it, and all those guys are getting yards. We feel good about that.

On the UH defense versus the Spartans…
You don't keep people under 200 yards very often. And if you look at they got 100 yards against our first unit and 60 something yards against our second unit. I'm really pleased with (defensive coordinator) Dave Aranda and all the defensive coaches. They had a great scheme. All of them played hard. You look over at our bench and you don't see guys looking at the crowd. The guys were in the game. Our guys get ready to play.

On Bryant Moniz breaking the school passing record…
It was completely a surprise. One thing, we didn't know we had that many passing yards. It was one of those games where it wasn't like we threw a bunch. We had a 98 yard drive. Colt (Brennan) held the record, and all of us here have been praying (for him). But we had no idea it beat Colt's record by 1. We took him (Moniz) out when were going to take him out and we had no idea where the record was. And pretty much any record that's ever been set, that's how I've been. You don't learn it till later on. We didn't keep him in there to break the record or anything.

On linebacker Aaron Brown, the WAC Defensive Player of the Week…
He's getting healthy. He had sort of been bothered by a hamstring and he's understanding our system now, he's learning the package. He's a great athlete, tough. He's just where he should be. He fit right in. We can run any coverage we want with him in there so it doesn't limit us on coverages and we can play any run defense also.

On New Mexico State freshman quarterback and Hawai'i product Andrew Manley...
We've always liked Andrew Manly. He's a strong armed guy who's a winner, that can run pretty good for a big guy. He'll be a great player—he already is for them. I have a lot of respect for him. He's a good kid too.
