WAIKOLOA, Hawai'i – The University of Hawai`i men's tennis team competed in both singles and doubles against national and Pac-10 powerhouse Stanford on Tuesday. The Rainbow Warriors held their own against the Cardinal who have four players and a doubles teams in the ITA Preseason Rankings.
Stanford won all six singles matches, but not without a fight. UH's
Dennis Lajola took defending NCAA singles champion Bradley Klahn to a tiebreaker in the first set, before falling 7-6, 6-2. Fellow senior
Jeremy Tweedt was also highly competitive in a 7-6, 6-3 loss to No. 59 Ryan Thacher. Sophomore
Dmytro Kovalyov came closest to taking down one of the Cardinal, before succumbing to Matt Kandath in a super tie-breaker, 6-3, 5-7, 1-0 (10-8).
The teams played three doubles matches with the Rainbow Warriors taking one of the courts. The freshman duo of
Jonathan Brooklyn and
David Schuster defeated Ted Kelly and Daniel Ho by an 8-6 count.
The Rainbow Warriors will officially open their regular season on Jan. 7 when they take on Louisville in the Rainbow Wahine Challenge.
