WAIKOLOA, Hawai'i – The University of Hawai`i women's tennis team competed against national and Pac-10 powerhouse Stanford in an exhibition match on Tuesday. The Cardinal, who fielded a pair of nationally ranked players, took every court in singles and doubles action.
Stanford won all six singles matches, however, UH nearly pulled off wins on half the courts. UH junior Barbara Pinterova took No. 21 Mallory Burdette to the wire before falling 6-1, 4-6, 6-4. Fellow junior Magdalena Ploch extended Kristie Ahn to three sets also in a 6-0, 4-6, 6-2 loss. Perhaps the tightest match was at court No. 6 where junior Aglae Van den Bergh eventually succumbed to Amelia Herring, 6-3, 6-7 (3), 6-4.
The Cardinal easily handled the Rainbow Wahine in doubles, headlined by Hillary Barte and Carolyn McVeighs's 8-2 victory over the No. 59 duo of Pinterova and Katarina Poljakova.
The Rainbow Wahine will officially open their regular season on Jan. 8 when they take on Duke at the UH Tennis Complex.
