About Me

I am the Sports Editor of MauiNow.com (Jan. 2012)
I was a Sportswriter for The Maui News for 20 years (Nov. 1985 to Nov. 2005). I covered mostly prep sports — football, track, basketball, soccer — and of course the Hula Bowl, Maui Invitational, Mercedes Golf Championships from Kapalua, and other events that came to Maui.
~One of the original co-host of SportsPhone on KMVI 550 AM with fellow sportswriter Robert Collias of the The Maui News. The current show call ESPN 550 SportsPhone with Fred Guzman broadcasts daily from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday.

St. Anthony High School, 1979

Graduate of University of Hawaii at Manoa, 1985.
I have a Bachelor of Arts Degree / BA in Broadcast Journalism with a Minor in Communications.

San Jose City College, San Jose, Calif., 1980
Ran track (hurdles) for the Jaguars of the Northern California Conference. Coached by Steve Haas, Bobby Poynter, Millard Hampton, Andre Phillips

Played football at St. Anthony (3 years varsity under Larry Joyo) and ran track (four years under Thomas Duarte)
In 1978 (fall), my senior year, we were undefeated at 8-0 and won the school's first MIL football championship in 20 years.
In 1979, I won a state gold medal in the 180-yard Low Hurdles, setting a new meet record of 19.1 seconds. Broke my own record of 19.6, set in the trials. Punahou's Dan Ciaci held the previous record of 19.9. Both the 180-yard low hurdles and record of 19.1 (WA) have since been retired in Hawaii High School Athletic Association Record Books as the 50th State converted to the metric system in 1980.
Won a silver medal in the 120-yard High Hurdles (14.5) behind Keneke Pacheco of Maui High (14.3) as the MIL had four hurdles in the state finals, with three finishing in the top five.
Went to Junior Olympics at Lincoln, Neb. with Pearl City sprinter Terrence Derby, St. Louis high jumper Jason Carvalho
In 1978, won a third-place state medal in the 120-yard HH and a third-place state medal in the 180-yard LH.
In 1977, won a fifth-place state medal in the 180-yard LH.

I have coached track at:
Damien High School (1981-82)
Kaiser High School (1983-84)
Seabury Hall (1995)

And football at St. Anthony (2007)
I was Assistant Athletic Director at St. Anthony (2006-2007)
