Perhaps Trenton Track Club's Athing Mu wanted to get one last tune-up under her legs before her national title attempt in the 800m on Sunday.
In doing so, she set an Emerging Elite meet record in the 400m.
Mu went 54.98 seconds on Friday at the Armory in New York to win the EE field and set a US No. 13 effort heading into her half-mile championship.
Oak Park's Miyah Brooks, who will feature in Motor City's championship 4x400 squad, was fourth in 56.88, while St. John's Alahna Sabbakhan, who will also run in Sunday's 800m championship, was eighth in 57.13.
Mu's previous best time came in December at the Armory in 55.79.
