Senior Spotlight: Elise Drake is going to Hawaii!

"My favorite memory has to be competing at the Nike Outdoor Nationals. Throwing at Hayward Field is definitely a surreal experience, especially after the World Championships were held there just a year prior. I love competing in the USA because you get to throw with such a large group of girls, in this case from across the country - the competition there is always great! The icing on the cake at this meet was my bronze medal performance. Standing on the podium in the middle of the stadium in front of a huge crowd was one of the coolest things I have ever experienced!"

With the momentum on an upward swing, it is no wonder Drake will be heading to the University of Hawaii next year where she will continue to pursue athletics.

"I have always dreamed of competing collegiately. When I first joined track, there were a couple of Grade 12 athletes who were making their university decision and that inspired me to do that myself. I talked to a lot of coaches and went on a few official visits, but ultimately decided on Hawaii. The team, the coaching staff, and both academic and athletic support at Hawaii were some of the main reasons for my decision. With hammer being my main event I liked that I would be able to throw outdoors all year round, something that can be very difficult in the snowy and icy Kelowna winters"

But before Drake makes the move from the snow to the sun, she has one last high school season to take care of.

"I hope to hold onto my provincial high school Hammer Throw title from last year and potentially claim the title in club track as well. I am also aiming to represent Team BC at the U20 Canadian Championships in Montreal and do my best to claim a medal. Other than that my goal is to have a consistent season, but most of all have fun and enjoy my last high school season."There is no doubt Drake has made great progress throughout her time on the high school scene and has a bright future ahead. With that, she has left us with a few parting words."Have fun and don't let a bad meet define you. For those looking to pursue athletics at the college level, put in the work both in the classroom and on the track. I think that this shows a strong work ethic and can make you even more appealing when talking to different schools"
