Hawaii Outdoors: May 4th-May 10th Top Performers and Breakthroughs
At league championships and last-chance meets across the islands, Hawaii's high school track and field athletes were busy putting on a show. Meets such as the OIA Varsity Track & Field Championships at Mililani, MIL Championships, and BIIF Last Chance Meet produced some of Hawaii's strongest marks of the outdoor season.
Sprints & Hurdles
The sprint events were highlighted by a breakout championship performance from Ashton Grace (Mililani High School), who captured the 200 meters in 22.61 at the OIA Varsity Track & Field Championships at Mililani while also placing sixth in the 100 meters in 11.16.
The freshman defeated several established upperclassmen, including state-ranked senior Zayne Pasion (Campbell High School), and continues to make the case that he's Hawaii's top freshman sprinter. Pasion also turned in a strong all-around championship performance, placing second in the 400 meters in 50.82 while competing in all three sprint events during the meet.
Matthew McCrary (Kapolei High School) captured the 110-meter hurdles title at the OIA Championships in 14.98, winning convincingly against a deep 19-athlete field.
On the girls side, Zen Kaopua (Kahuku High School) delivered one of the top sprint performances of the week by winning the 100 meters in 12.31 at the OIA Championships. The sophomore defeated state contender Martha Nabea (Mililani High School), who responded later in the meet with a 25.83 victory in the 200 meters while also placing third in the 100 in 12.63.
On the breakthrough front, Raiyan Rahman (Waiakea) improved from 12.39 to 11.57 in the 100 meters at the BIIF Last Chance Meet, one of the largest sprint breakthroughs of the week statewide. Rahman also lowered his 110-meter hurdles best to 17.79. Meanwhile, Faith Mataele (Kahuku) lowered her 100-meter best from 12.73 to 12.49 at the OIA Varsity Eastern Division Track Championships at Moanalua, and posted personal records in both the 100 hurdles and 200 meters during the same meet.
Distance
The distance events were highlighted by another strong middle-distance performance from Ryan Jacobsen (Campbell High School), who ran 2:00.22 for second place in the 800 meters at the OIA Championships. He now ranks as Hawaii's top sophomore in the event this season.
On the girls side, Kaitlyn Bitterman (Mililani High School) delivered one of the top distance marks of the week, running 4:49.74 for second place in the 1500 meters at the OIA Championships, making her the top junior in Hawaii in the event this spring.
Several athletes also delivered major breakthroughs in the distance events. Oscar Reed (Hawaii Preparatory Academy) lowered his 3000-meter best from 9:59.87 to 9:44.55 at the BIIF Last Chance Meet. Danilynn Padilla (Keaau) lowered her 3000-meter PR from 11:45.39 to 11:17.70 at the same meet - a school record that moves her to fourth among Hawaii sophomores this season.
Another notable improvement came from Isaac Erman (Le Jardin Academy), who lowered his 800-meter best from 2:12.04 to 2:08.07 at the JV ILH Championships.
Jumps
The jumps were highlighted by Bruce Beltran (Kamehameha Schools Maui), who cleared 14-4 to win the pole vault title at the MIL Championships. The clearance ranks him as the top junior pole vaulter in Hawaii this season.
On the girls side, Isabel Best (King Kekaulike High School) captured the high jump title at the MIL Championships with a clearance of 5-4, establishing herself as Hawaii's top junior in the event this spring.
Throws
The throws were headlined by one of the top performances recorded in Hawaii this season from Cassera Togia White (Farrington). White launched the discus 161-1.5 at the OIA Varsity Eastern Division Track Championships at Moanalua, improving significantly from her previous best of 146-9.
The throw set a school record for Farrington High School and currently ranks first in Hawaii this season, further establishing White among the state's elite throwers heading into championship season.
