Maui News: Grossman leads Spartans to win at MIL meet No. 1

 

PUKALANI - Dakota Grossman has picked up right where she left off.
 
The defending state champion from Seabury Hall dominated the field at the first Maui Interscholastic League cross country meet of the season Saturday, winning by more than two minutes on the Kamehameha Schools Maui course.
 
Grossman, who won the MIL and state titles last season as a freshman, completed the race in a time of 19 minutes, 14 seconds, well ahead of runner-up Gracie Peck (21:35).
 
Grossman and Peck led a strong Spartans contingent that swept the top seven spots overall. Seabury Hall posted 15 points in finishing first in the team standings, Baldwin was second with 95 and Maui High third with 104.
 
Justine Malek placed third in 21:55, while Kiana Smith - the top junior varsity girls finisher - was fourth in 22:01.
 
In the boys race, defending MIL champion Rocky Balala of Maui High crossed the finish line first in 16:53, edging Baldwin's James Pearson by four seconds.
